Portugal is increasingly known for its quality wines, but fewer people know that it is also the country with the most native grape varieties. This means that Portuguese wine is unique in terms of the range of wines it produces compared with its European neighbors and the rest of the world.
Port is Portugal's most famous wine. Its grapes are grown only on the terraced hillsides of the Douro Demarcated Region, in the far north of Portugal. Port has been stored in the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia since the second half of the 17th century. Discover the three types of port wine - Ruby, Tawny, White - and its special categories - Harvest, Reserva, LBV, Aged and Vintage Tawnies.

Portugal has always produced liqueurs and spririts such as Bagaceira, Ginjinha, Licor Beirão, Amêndoa Amarga and Medronho. More recently producers have turned to vodka and gin. Portuguese gin has become very fashionable and its quality is becoming internationally recognized.

Fortified Wines are liqueur wines of superior quality and produced in Demarcated Regions such as Carcavelos (Carcavelos Wine), Setúbal (Moscatel) or Madeira (Madeira Wine). They are usually served as an aperitif or dessert wine.
